This panel detects seven different opportunistic infections. Infections can play a significant role in the development of certain types of cancer. Chronic infections with viruses, (such as human papillomavirus HPV) have been strongly associated with an increased risk of developing specific cancers. Detecting and treating these infections early through screening can help prevent or manage associated cancers.

Infections can also contribute to the development of neurological diseases. Some infections, such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) and Lyme disease (caused by Borrelia burgdorferi), can lead to neurological complications if left untreated. Early detection of these infections through screening allows for timely intervention and appropriate management, potentially preventing or minimizing neurological damage.

Certain infections have been linked to triggering or exacerbating autoimmune diseases. For example, group A streptococcus infections can lead to rheumatic fever, which can subsequently result in autoimmune conditions like rheumatic heart disease.

Infections can coexist or occur alongside cancer, neurological diseases, or autoimmune diseases, leading to more severe or complex conditions.

  • HHV (Human Herpesvirus)

Several members of the HHV family have been directly linked to the development of certain types of cancer. For example, HHV-8 is associated with Kaposi's sarcoma, a cancer that primarily affects individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS.

  • HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus):

While HSV infections themselves do not directly cause cancer, some studies have suggested a potential association between HSV-2 (Herpes Simplex Virus type 2) infection and an increased risk of certain cancers, such as cervical, penile, and prostate cancers. Some studies have also shown a possible association between HSV infection and an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. The proposed hypothesis suggests that HSV-2 infection may trigger chronic inflammation and neuronal damage.

  • CMV (Cytomegalovirus):

CMV infection has been implicated in certain cancers, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. CMV has been associated with an increased risk of developing certain types of lymphomas, such as post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) and primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), primarily observed in solid organ transplant recipients and individuals with HIV/AIDS.

  • EBV (Epstein-Barr Virus):

EBV is closely linked to the development of several cancers, including Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and certain subtypes of gastric carcinoma. EBV infection is considered a significant risk factor for these malignancies, particularly in endemic regions and individuals with weakened immune systems.

  • Streptococcal Infections:

Group A streptococcus infections, particularly those caused by certain strains like Streptococcus pyogenes, are associated with an increased risk of developing rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever, if left untreated, can lead to rheumatic heart disease, which may result in valve damage and increase the risk of heart-related conditions.

  • * The relationship between these infections and cancer development is complex and influenced by various factors, including the individual's immune response, genetic predisposition, and other environmental factors.

How It Works

1

Order Your Test

24-28 hours after the order is placed, you'll get an email from our partner, Rupa Health, who will help facilitate the shipment from the lab. Test kits will be shipped and received in 2-4 business days.

2

Take Your Test

You will receive personalized testing instructions from Rupa Health This will include instructions for your tests, and assistance finding a nearby phlebotomist if your test requires a blood draw.

3

Analyze Your Test

Results are comprehensive and will give you in-depth data into your health. View sample results when browsing tests. You may download these results and share them with your medical provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do I receive my results?

Your results will be e-mailed to you in 10-30 days after receiving the sample. Turn around time varies depending on the lab test ordered.

What should I do if I take the test and I receive an abnormal result?

No consultations are provided at this time. Please make an appointment with your primary care physician and discuss your results with him/her. We do not offer medical advice, treatment, or prescriptions.

Do you take insurance?

No, we do not accept insurance. You may however use your HSA/ FSA.

I’ve received my results, now what?

At this time we don’t offer physician follow up appointments. The results can be downloaded and taken with you to discuss with your primary care physician.

Due to state restrictions, Proactive Wellness lab tests are not available to residents of New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

Do I need to be referred by a doctor to order a test?

No. No referral required.

How do I share my results with my doctor?

You may download the results and either print or email them to share with your doctor.

Can I stop going to my primary care physician?

No, this is not in replacement of your annual physical. Your annual physical blood work will measure standard lab work that we do not test for.

How often should I get tested?

Testing is generally recommended every 6 months- 1 year.
